Square Foot Plant Spacing

After you have built your square foot garden and are ready to plant, here is the correct spacing for each plant. Happy Gardening!

Plant Spacing: 

 

Asparagus: 1- 4 per sq ft

Arugula: 4 per sq ft

Beans: 9 per sq ft of bush variety or 8 per sqft of pole variety

Beets:  9-16 per sq ft 

Broccoli: 1 per sq ft

Cabbage: 1 per sq ft 

 Carrots: 16 per sq ft

Cauliflower: 1 per sq ft

Chard, Swiss: 4 per sq ft

Corn: 4 per sq ft

Cucumber: 2 per sq ft

Eggplant: 1 per sq ft

Lettuce : 4 per sq ft

Melon: 1 per 2 sq ft

Okra: 1 per sq ft

Onion: 16 per sq ft

Parsley: 4 per sq ft

Pea: 8 per sq ft

Pepper: 1 per sq ft

Potato: 4 per sq ft 

Radish: 16 per sq ft

Spinach: 9 per sq ft

Strawberry: 4 per sqft

Summer Squash: 1 per 2 sq ft of vine variety or 1 per 9 sq ft of bush variety

Winter Squash: 1 per 2 sq ft

Tomato: 1 per sq ft of vine variety or 1 per 9 sq ft of bush variety

Herb Spacing: 


Basil: 1 large per sq ft or 4 small per sq ft  

Chive: 16 per sq ft

Cilantro: 1 per sq ft

Mint: 1 per sq ft

Oregano: 1 per sq ft

Lavender: 1 per sq ft

Flower Spacing: 


Dahlia: 1-4 per sq ft

Marigold: 1-4 per sq ft

Sunflower: 1-2 per sq ft

Zinnia: 8 per sq ft

Poppy: 1-2 per sq ft
